Luckily the only seafood allergy in the family is my 'prawn issue' so mussels are on the menu for us all. Obviously the classical version with cream is a no go; but Belgo do a good variety of sauces which means there was actual choice for Molly. To be honest the menu caters well for those who don't want mussels with a nice selection of burgers, standard mains and a rotisserie.
The waitress was helpful over the milk allergy question and went to the kitchen to check that the Thai mussels only had coconut milk in them before we ordered. Happily they were declared 'Molly safe'. I was delighted to find a gluten free beer to go with my mussels. The food arrived and it was great. Generous portions, great chips and, perhaps not surprisingly, wonderful mussels.
We were even happier when we saw the dessert menu with gelato. Again the waitress went to the kitchen to check the ingredients and confirmed that the gelato was milk free. It's so rare to find a milk free dessert in a restaurant that we ordered it for Molly. The confusion arose when a server (not our lovely waitress) brought it out covered in whipped cream. He couldn't understand the issue due to language barriers so we had to find our waitress to get it sorted out. Which they did happily and quickly.
My gripe? Well it would be great if the menu showed allergies (dairy, celery, mustard, egg) or if the waiting staff were trained to know which dishes had the most common 'allergy ingredients'.
Having said all that it's only fair to report that when Sophie took her daughter to Belgo they offered to make up any sauce from scratch without celery for their daughter.
